Unfortunately, there are still some difficulties in the operation of the service - not all functions in it are intuitive, and the registration procedure can generally take several days.

Designation on old plastic ID cards

The code designation was also used on the old model. Certificates about the authority that issued the driver's license (VU) were entered in the hexagonal stamp in the lower left part.

Signs identifying certificates of the department were located at the top, followed by the word “Staff Police”, and below was the employee’s personal identification number.

This form of encoding did not require the use of a large format, but it did not comply with international standards. And after Russia signed the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic of 1968, a similar need arose.

That is why a new format was introduced that allows you to drive without international VP on the roads of countries participating in the Vienna Agreement.

Designation on old paper IDs

On old paper VUs, department data is presented in a more accessible form. To find them, you don’t need to know the item number and the number of digits that need to be counted.

Certificates about the State Traffic Inspectorate department are indicated in the section “Issued by the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs-UVD” and then the full name of the city in which the VP was issued is written.

In addition, the information was duplicated on the seal that was placed on the document.

Coding of traffic police departments on a new model

A driver's license always contains information about the inspection that issued the license. With outdated rights, this information took up a lot of space. Modernized documents are made on a plastic basis, where optical-electronic means are widely used for reliable photo identification. Such a certificate is much smaller, which means that the entire name of the issuing inspection authority simply does not physically fit on it. Taking this small nuance into account, specialists have created a system for encoding the names of traffic police departments, which facilitates the procedure for reading and displaying the necessary information.

Deciphering the region code

And if you just want to identify the region in which you received your license, you can do this using the list of codes from Appendix No. 1 to Order No. 766 of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia dated October 5, 2017 “On state vehicle signs.”

On old plastic IDs

To decipher signs on old VPs, you can also use the traffic police website or Appendix No. 1 to Order No. 766. The upper two digits indicate the department code, i.e., the region of its location, and the lower ones indicate the employee code.

In what other cases will you need a traffic police department code?
