Do you need compulsory motor insurance for the trailer of a car or truck and how much will the policy cost in 2021?

Cost of insurance

The law provides for two insurance procedures:

  • voluntary for passenger cars
  • mandatory for trucks

Separate insurance for the trailer is not issued. When submitting an application, you must put a check mark on the operation of the machine with a tow hitch. Its number and model are not indicated.

Is it necessary to undergo maintenance of the trailer? Get your trailer inspected in order to receive full payments from your insurance company. If you do not do this, you will be issued a policy, but in the event of an accident, compensation may be denied.

Types of trailers include:

  • platforms
  • side views
  • on one and two axles, spreader trailers

All trailers are also divided into passenger trailers and universal cargo trailers. The first ones are intended for installation on passenger vehicles, the second ones, respectively, on trucks. There are also special purpose trailers:

  • dump trucks used for transporting bulk solids
  • tanks used for liquids
  • for equipment: motorcycles, snowmobiles, boats
  • car transporters for car delivery
  • tourist trailers, summer cottages, aimed at providing recreation for people
  • commercial, equipped with commercial equipment
  • for transporting animals

This norm is established by the provisions of paragraphs. d, clause 3, art. 4 of the Federal Law of April 25, 2002 No. 40 “On OSAGO”, which was introduced by the Federal Law of December 1, 2007 No. 306. However, the legislator does not limit the right of the car owner to obtain insurance if he has such a desire, Moreover, you can get both OSAGO and CASCO policies.

Trailer insurance is required in the following cases:

  • the owner of a car with a trailer is a legal entity;
  • the trailer is a cargo trailer;
  • The trailer is used with a bus, scooter or motorcycle.

You can calculate the exact cost of trailer insurance on the insurer’s website using the capabilities of its online calculator. It is recommended to take out a policy for the period during which the trailer is actually in use - this will significantly reduce the cost of its purchase.

The law does not require owners to insure caravans, but an exception applies if the following conditions are met:

  • permitted maximum weight – less than 3.5 tons;
  • wheeled vehicles are registered with the traffic police;
  • owner of a trailer is an individual who uses the equipment for personal purposes.

Cargo trailers are subject to compulsory insurance, as are car trailers owned by legal entities. Since 2014, Clause 7, Art. 4, which directly indicates the need to insure trailers by concluding a compulsory motor insurance agreement, which indicates the possibility of driving a car and a trailer to it. This requirement does not apply to citizens who purchased a trailer for a passenger car, which does not prevent them from voluntarily insuring the trailer.

To travel around Europe, a number of countries in Asia and Africa (Morocco, Tunisia, Turkey, etc.), you must obtain a Green Card. The Green Card is issued separately for the trailer and the vehicle. The cost of this policy depends on the size of the insured property (trailer equipment is cheaper than a car), as well as the period of conclusion of the contract and the territory in which the document will be valid (unlimited travel in Europe is more expensive than travel to neighboring Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova and Azerbaijan) .

As you know, when calculating the cost of a vehicle license, a base rate and special correction factors are used. Each indicator is established at the legislative level and changes its meaning depending on the data of the vehicle and its owner.

One of these indicators is the trailer coefficient, which changes its value depending on the type of vehicle.

Thus, the indicator that increases the cost of the policy changes its value as follows:

  1. For cars registered to a company, a KPR of 1.16 is multiplied.
  2. Truck weighing up to 16 tons – 1.4.
  3. With a mass of more than 16 tons - 1.25.
  4. Tractors and other tracked vehicles – 1.24.

CASCO for trailer

Communities Repair and Operation of LPG Blog Variator UO on VAZ
Insurance of trailers under CASCO is not particularly different from insurance of other vehicles. It includes the same risks: theft and damage (as a result of an accident, natural disasters, hooliganism). Trailer rates range from 0.50% to 3.00% depending on the make/model of trailer and risk mix. Since the demand for various types of trailers invariably makes them a tasty morsel for car thieves, owners often limit themselves to insurance only against theft (tariff from 0.50% to 1.00%).

Car owners rarely insure a trailer voluntarily; the classic online CASCO calculator, as a rule, does not provide for calculating the cost of a policy for trailers. You can discuss the price and terms of the contract over the phone or during a personal visit to the insurance company. Large transport companies and cargo carriers do not skimp on car insurance for trailers. But they, as a rule, enter into a comprehensive agreement with the insurer, which includes cargo insurance, CASCO, OSAGO, DSAGO and other types. Therefore, the cost of CASCO insurance is lower for them.

Does it require a technical inspection and a diagnostic card?

The existence of obligations to conduct a technical inspection is determined by certain features. Thus, individuals are required to insure a trailer only if the weight of the vehicle and towbar exceeds 3.5 tons.

Legal entities are required to receive a diagnostic card for their cars under the following conditions:

  • Once every 2 years - for trailers whose age ranges from 3 to 7 years;
  • once a year - if the age of adaptation is more than 7 years;
  • once every six months - when transporting potentially dangerous goods in a trailer;

If a motorist has purchased a new trailer, a technical inspection is not a mandatory procedure for the first three years.

Cost of trailer insurance

Communities Fan Club BMW E34 and E36 Blog The car is heating up. I've already changed everything

When calculating the cost of insuring cars with a trailer, a special coefficient (Kpr) is used. The formula for determining the final cost of the MTPL policy is as follows:

Policy price = Bst * Km * TK * KVS * KBM * Kpr, where:

Bst – base rate of compulsory motor liability insurance;

Km – vehicle power factor;

ТК – coefficient of territorial affiliation of the car owner;

KVS – coefficient of dependence of the driver’s age and driving experience;

Kpr - trailer coefficient.

If we are talking about passenger cars owned by organizations, then the coefficient will be 1.16. If we talk about trailers and semi-trailers that are used by freight transport, then the coefficient varies from 1.25 to 1.4. Special vehicles used for the construction and reconstruction of roads are subject to a coefficient of 1.24. For all other types of trailers, and, therefore, for trailers of passenger cars owned by citizens, an indicator equal to one is used. Thus, the cost of the policy for private car owners using trailers does not change.

Taking out insurance for a car with a trailer for private car owners works like this: the manager of the insurance company asks the policyholder whether a trailer up to 750 kg will be used. If yes, then a mark is added to the policy completely free of charge.

Features of the MTPL policy for a trailer for traveling abroad and when drawing up a European protocol

Owners of a vehicle with a trailer are wondering: is it possible to issue a European protocol in the event of an accident right on the spot or is it necessary to call the traffic police? There are some nuances here:

  1. The towbar is considered part of the car, so in the event of an accident, which by all indications can be registered without the participation of the traffic police, both drivers can get by with a European protocol.
  2. Even if two cars with trailers collide, the accident can be registered under the European protocol.
  3. If, as a result of an accident, damage is caused to the trailer of a passenger car, which is not included in the MTPL agreement, then a problem arises. Since the trailer is not insured, it is better to get advice from your insurance company by phone before filling out the notice.

It is noteworthy that insurance for private trailer owners has been canceled only in Russia, so when traveling abroad you have to take out an insurance policy for the device.

In what cases is it necessary to take out insurance for a trailer?

Communities Volkswagen Club Blog How to lubricate the door mechanism

If a person who is an individual decides to purchase a trailer for a car, most likely he will have a question: “Is the trailer insured under MTPL? " So, you don’t need insurance for a passenger car trailer. One car insurance policy is enough.

When is trailer insurance needed?

  1. bus owners;
  2. scooter owners.
  3. cargo trailer insurance (for truck owners);
  4. motorcycle owners;
  5. legal entities require insurance for a passenger trailer;
  • If dangerous goods are transported on a trailer.
    then a technical inspection will be required every six months.
  • A trailer from 3 to 7 years old must undergo technical inspection once every 2 years.
  • A new trailer does not require technical inspection for 3 years.
  • The trailer is more than 7 years old - a technical inspection is required once every 12 months.

When purchasing a new trailer, you need to check its VIN code and identification number in the registration certificate. They must match and have no blots. When purchasing a trailer, it is imperative to draw up a sales contract.

You may need it when registering your trailer and taking out insurance. First, let us recall that there is law No. 306.

released in 2007. Federal law states that insuring a trailer on a car that belongs to an individual.

face is optional. And legal entities must obtain insurance for the trailer. For them, an insurance contract is mandatory.

It's a little easier with truck trailers.

They are insured by everyone without exception without fail, regardless of whether it is a legal entity or an individual. You will need a compulsory motor liability insurance policy. Therefore, if an individual has a truck and a trailer at his disposal, then he must have a compulsory MTPL insurance contract for both vehicles.

You can calculate the tariff yourself.

You need to use the formula: multiply the basic tariff by the territorial coefficient. Then multiply the obtained result by the coefficient of the period of use of the trailer. The best time to insure your trailer is during the busiest time of year.

Example: March-October, etc. If you drive and use your trailer most actively during this period of the year, then you need to insure it. If you have taken out an insurance policy for a trailer under the compulsory insurance program, then it will be possible to insure the trailer against only one factor - a traffic accident.

  1. theft of a trailer or its components;
  2. sinking of trailer.
  3. damage in the event of a natural disaster;
  4. damage in a traffic accident;
  5. damage due to soil collapse;
  6. fire;

Legal entities prefer to take out insurance for their trailers through CASCO.

Thanks to CASCO insurance, they can quickly carry out car repairs. If it is impossible to restore the trailer, then CASCO will compensate for all losses. Thus, a person injured in an accident must contact the insurance company of the person at fault for the accident.

But there is an exception: direct damages.

In such a situation, the injured person receives a payment from their insurance company.

  • During an accident on the road, damage is caused only to the property of the insured person.
  • No more than two cars were involved in the accident. Both drivers must have insurance from MTPL.

Therefore, it must be taken into account that if an accident occurs involving a truck with a trailer and a regular car, then it is considered that three vehicles were involved in the accident. There will be no direct refund.

But if the collision occurred between a truck and a trailer from a car, then traffic police officers record an accident involving 2 vehicles. With peace of mind, you can go to the MTPL insurance company and request direct compensation.

During a traffic accident, it is important to correctly identify the person at fault. Perhaps the car itself or the trailer is at fault

Experts examine marks and damage located on trailers and vehicles. The car owner has a choice - OSAGO or CASCO

Perhaps the car itself or the trailer is at fault. Experts examine marks and damage located on trailers and vehicles. The car owner has a choice - OSAGO or CASCO.

The price of insurance depends on several important elements. Namely: the region in which the trailer was registered and the period of application.

An individual may not insure a trailer on a passenger car, since this is his will. The CASCO policy is more profitable in terms of the development of an accident: it covers any damage, theft, etc.

Types of insurance for trucks

The MTPL policy for a truck is a document confirming the fact of civil liability insurance of the truck owner. The owner of a truck can be either an individual or a legal entity. Taking out an MTPL policy is a civilized way to protect the interests of road users. The MTPL policy is usually called that familiar word for all of us - “insurance”. Truck insurance can be issued either on paper or electronically.

Electronic

All services in our country, taking into account the global trend, are being converted into electronic form. This trend has not bypassed the provision of auto insurance services.

Issuing an MTPL policy for a truck in electronic form is no different from issuing an MTPL policy on paper. The difference is that based on the results of registration, a document is generated in electronic form, which is stored in the RSA (Russian Union of Motor Insurers) database. The electronic policy can be printed on paper any number of times. We also note that electronic insurance for a truck has the same legal force as paper insurance.

Example of electronic insurance

Rice. 3 Example of electronic insurance

Paper

Example of paper insurance

Rice. 4 Example of paper insurance

Based on the results of registration of truck insurance, an MTPL policy is issued in paper form, in the classic version, on a colored form with holographic protection. Data on its availability is stored in the RSA (Russian Union of Auto Insurers) database, but it is impossible to print it out a second time.

This MTPL policy for a truck is issued in a single version; if it is damaged or lost, you can get a new version only at the central office of the insurance company. However, given the conservatism of our people, many are more familiar with the paper insurance option. Pensioners feel more comfortable holding paper insurance in their hands, and it is difficult to convince them that a policy on paper is identical to a policy in electronic form.

I would like to note one more feature of the paper policy. Not long ago, a law on the effective date of an electronic policy came into force in Russia; in accordance with this law, an electronic policy comes into force only 3 days after registration. However, a paper policy issued in our company will be valid within an hour after registration, for many this factor has been decisive lately, that is, a paper policy is valid every day.

OSAGO for a truck for individuals

Below is a list of features that are inherent in issuing an MTPL policy for trucks that are registered with an individual:

  • The cost of an MTPL policy for a truck for individuals is lower than the cost of an MTPL policy for legal entities.
  • The place of registration at the place of residence of the truck owner significantly affects the cost of compulsory motor liability insurance.
  • Several drivers may be allowed to drive a truck, and if the KBM coefficient, which is responsible for accident-free driving, is not increased for any of them, then this reduces the cost of insurance for the truck.
  • Also, the cost of an MTPL policy for trucks is affected by the maximum permitted weight of the truck (up to 16 tons inclusive or more).
  • The presence of a trailer increases the cost of the MTPL policy for a truck by 25%. The period for which an MTPL policy for a truck is issued for individuals can be from 3 to 12 months.

OSAGO for a truck for legal entities

A MTPL policy for a truck for legal entities is always issued for an unlimited number of drivers allowed to drive a vehicle. Because of this condition, the cost of insurance for legal entities is always significantly higher than the cost of an MTPL policy for individuals. When calculating an MTPL policy for a truck, the territorial coefficient is used at the place of registration of the legal entity, and not at its actual location. Also, the cost of an MTPL policy for trucks is affected by the maximum permitted weight of the truck (up to 16 tons inclusive or more). The presence of a trailer increases the cost of the MTPL policy for a truck by 25%. The period for which an MTPL policy for a truck is issued for legal entities can be from 3 to 12 months.

Everyone needs to buy OSAGO for a trailer.

According to current legislation, every vehicle owner who has a truck trailer at their disposal should enter into an MTPL agreement. Moreover, this applies to both individuals and legal entities. If you did not manage to issue both policies on time, this may result in fines from traffic police inspectors.

For any freight vehicle, it is necessary to conclude a compulsory motor liability insurance agreement in a timely manner. In this case, it is best to insure the trailer at the same time as the truck; this will be much more convenient, profitable and reliable. No matter how insignificant and formal the obligation to make an MTPL with a diagnostic card for a cargo trailer may seem to you, neglecting these rules can lead to serious troubles with the traffic police. At best, these will be simple monetary fines, and at worst, a ban on operating the vehicle.

OSAGO trailer: design features

A trailer for commercial vehicles is not a self-propelled vehicle, but nevertheless it must be registered in the territory of registration of its owner. This must be done within the first ten days after its purchase. Remember that in order to contact the traffic police and register the vehicle in accordance with all the rules, you will first need to buy compulsory motor liability insurance. Our company will help you do this easily, quickly, and without extra effort.

  • Step #1. Insure your truck. For this large-sized and powerful type of vehicle, special conditions for obtaining insurance are provided. In most cases, trucks are owned by legal entities, so you can only buy MTPL for them without restrictions, or as it is called, “multidrive”. Absolutely anyone can drive such a vehicle if they have a driver’s license of the required category.
  • Step #2. Insure your trailer with MTPL. But first, the trailer will need a separate diagnostic inspection card confirming its full serviceability and suitability for use. Only after successfully passing the technical diagnostics will you be able to enter into an MTPL agreement and drive the truck legally.

OSAGO with a diagnostic card for a trailer: the importance of technical inspection

For a trailer to a truck, you will need not only a separate MTPL policy, but also an additional technical inspection. According to the rules, every trailer owned by legal entities must undergo regular technical diagnostics. If the permissible maximum weight of this vehicle does not exceed 3.5 tons, then the frequency of maintenance is the same as for passenger cars:

  • Trailers under 3 years of age are exempt from technical inspection.
  • 3-7 years: passing every 24 months.
  • Over 7 years: annually.

It is much more difficult to obtain compulsory motor liability insurance with a diagnostic card for trailers equipped for transporting dangerous types of cargo: they need to be sent for maintenance once every six months. It is not always possible to undergo technical diagnostics so often, especially considering the fact that the truck may be on a long journey.

We offer you a simple and modern solution: buy ready-made compulsory motor vehicle liability insurance with a diagnostic card for a truck and its trailer at the same time from our company. This will significantly save time, resources, and will be an indispensable solution for the successful development of your business.

Buying OSAGO for a trailer is simple and affordable!

  • High quality: the best Russian insurers are at your service!
  • Low prices: trailer insurance is affordable for absolutely everyone, and it will always pay for itself!
  • Guarantee of legality: only genuine insurance policies that can always be checked for legitimacy.

New OSAGO for trailers, semi-trailers, swing trailers

The updated law freed the owners of any trailers from the need to purchase separate insurance for these vehicles. Now the owners of cargo trailers, as well as the legal entity that owns trailers for passenger cars, can draw up an agreement only for the main vehicle (tractor), but with an increasing factor. At the same time, the policy (column “Special notes”) indicates that the car is “Used with a trailer.” Note that at first, in some regions, insurers interpreted this provision of the law very arbitrarily, indicating in the document a specific trailer model. It is not right! The policy should only indicate the use of a vehicle with a trailer. It is not necessary to enter the model, license plates and any other information about the trailer. Thus, the owner of the insured vehicle has the right to use it with any trailer that is at his disposal.

Table 1. Correction factors for compulsory motor liability insurance for vehicles with a trailer.

In a similar way, you can insure DSAGO (DAGO) for a trailer. The policy will be issued entirely for the road train (coupling) at the appropriate rate.

Do I need to include it in my MTPL policy in 2021?

Yes, but not for everyone and not in all cases. In fact, there are only 2 simple options, and we will answer them with links to the official law.

For passenger car

Trailers used on passenger cars by individuals in 2021 do not require a note to be included in the MTPL policy. Including no need to contact the insurance company or indicate anything in the insurance if you purchased one.

To confirm this, there are 3 references to the regulatory framework of the Russian Federation:

  • subparagraph “e” of Part 3 of Article 4 of the Federal Law on Compulsory Motor Liability Liability Liability Insurance specifies citizens’ trailers for passenger cars as an exception to the obligation to issue a separate MTPL for them,
  • Part 7 of the same article prescribes that in other cases the obligation to insure the liability of vehicles with carts is implemented in the form of purchasing insurance indicating in the appropriate column that they are used with a trailer,
  • The Supreme Court directly indicated the same thing in one of its explanations (paragraph 44 of the Resolution of the Plenum of the RF Supreme Court No. 58).

Thus, there are 2 conditions when MTPL for a trailer and the corresponding mark in the policy are not needed:

  1. if your car is a passenger car,
  2. if you are not a legal entity.

The mark is used with a trailer to a passenger car

For truck

But for trailers for cargo vehicles, you need a note in the insurance policy about the use of the trailer. We are talking about the following cars:

  • trucks where the trailer is docked with the tractor,
  • trucks with a permissible maximum weight of more than 3.5 tons,
  • since the definition of a truck is not given either in the law On Compulsory Motor Liability Insurance or in other regulations, this essentially includes Gazelles and similar vehicles - that is, a mark is required for them.

Types of trailer policies

The type of MTPL insurance worth taking out depends on how many people have the right to drive a car with a tow hitch. The policy can be limited or unlimited.

An unlimited validity insurance document has some special features. If the policyholder wishes to transfer the operation of the vehicle to another person, there is no need to change or supplement the information in the policy.

Based on the rules of the motor vehicle insurance policy, when concluding a compulsory motor liability insurance contract, insurance is mainly subject to the civil liability of a person, i.e. the owner, for property damage that will be caused to other persons involved in an accident on the road.

Among the main cases covered by insurance, the following situations can be distinguished:

  • material damage caused in an accident;
  • theft of your property, which was insured;
  • causing harm as a result of the elements;
  • fire;
  • damage caused by soil collapse;
  • material damage from illegal actions of other persons.

However, the insurance document does not protect in all cases. Among the exceptions, it is possible to single out moral damage, the conclusion of an insurance contract for another car that was involved in an accident on the road.

But if the vehicle is used with a trailer (semi-trailer), and there is no corresponding mark in the car insurance, then the fine will be 800 rubles. If the policy is issued in accordance with the law, but is simply forgotten at home, the driver will have to pay a fine of 500 rubles.

The rules of compulsory insurance and traffic rules imply that the MTPL policy (or its printed electronic copy) for a car with a trailer must be kept along with other documents for presentation if necessary.

This is approved in amendments to the current legislation:

  • MTPL law - No. 40-FZ dated March 28, 2017, clause 7.2, article 15;
  • Traffic rules - clause 2.1.1.

Penalties are imposed in the following situations:

  • driving without a document of insurance or a false document;
  • the policy is expired;
  • the list of authorized persons does not indicate the driver driving the car, another car is registered or is used outside the period permitted by insurance;
  • There is a compulsory motor liability insurance policy, but for some reason the driver cannot present it (it is easy for an inspector to check the availability of insurance).

Important! After the expiration date, the OSAGO document should not be thrown away, because when you receive a new one, the BMC (bonus-malus coefficient) is taken into account, which, after querying in the database of the automated system of the Russian Union of Auto Insurers (AIS RSA), can significantly affect the approximate cost of the new policy. The amount of monetary fines is clearly regulated by current legislation and is:

The amount of monetary fines is clearly regulated by current legislation and is:

  1. The amount of the administrative fine in the absence of insurance or expiration of the validity period is 800 rubles. (Part 2 of Article 12.37 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation).
  2. The amount of the administrative fine due to the temporary absence of an insurance document is 500 rubles. (Part 2 of Article 12.3 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation). The inspector will not accept excuses about a forgotten policy at home or in the office.
  3. If, if you have insurance, the car is driven by a driver who is not included in the policy, or the driving takes place outside the period of use of the car specified in the policy, the fine is 500 rubles. (Part 1 of Article 12.37 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation).

The state is accommodating to conscientious payers, so drivers who violate insurance rules (Federal Law No. 437) are given the opportunity to halve the amount of the fine if payment is made within the first 20 days after the imposition of sanctions.

It should be remembered that fines for lack of insurance are assessed repeatedly, so taking out insurance is more profitable and much cheaper.

In order to combat driving without an insurance policy, an innovation in 2021 may be the use of video cameras that will check recorded vehicle license plates with a unified database of the Russian Union of Auto Insurers (RUA).

For absence from this database, car owners will receive receipts for administrative penalties. The timing of the adoption of the amendment to the legislation is not known, but the approval is beyond doubt.

Do I need to register a trailer with the traffic police?

The answer is obvious - it is necessary. The motorist must register the trailer at any available traffic police registration office. This procedure takes 10 days from the date of customs clearance, purchase or deregistration. To register, you must provide a vehicle passport and a document confirming the legal purchase and sale.

As a result of the procedure, the driver will receive a license plate and a certificate confirming registration for the trailer. Once registration is completed, the driver will be able to legally drive a vehicle with a trailer.

Types of trailers and insurance nuances

Legal entities are insured for six months, and individuals for 3 months.

It should be remembered that any insurance, first of all, acts as a guarantor in order to compensate the material costs of the injured person as a result of damage caused by third parties. That is, if you get into a traffic accident in which the car owner is not listed as the culprit, the company undertakes to cover all costs necessary to repair and restore the vehicle.

When can you expect compensation for damage associated with damage to a trailer:

  • if any parts are missing from the trailer, it is not the fault of the owner;
  • the trailer hitch was stolen;
  • if this equipment gets into unforeseen situations related to weather conditions, for example, falling under ice, or deep holes on the roads, etc.;
  • losses are compensated after participation in an accident;
  • The mobile device is also insured against fire or natural disasters;
  • if there were illegal actions of a third party that resulted in damage to property.

Some insurance companies offer their clients discounts when applying for compulsory motor liability insurance. This may be due to the fact that the policy has been renewed by the same company more than once, or when the number of insured vehicles has become large.

If you wish to terminate the contract ahead of schedule, the applicant will be refunded the amount of unused insurance premium. Such situations may arise, for example, in the event of a sale.

But owners of tractor-trailers must provide for the possibility of driving a vehicle with a trailer when registering for compulsory motor liability insurance. In this case, a special note will appear on the policy

In this case, it does not matter at all whether cargo is transported every day, or whether additional mechanized means are used occasionally

From the above, we can conclude that the cost of insurance for a passenger car from the use of a “trunk on wheels” will not change, but the policy will cost more for the owner of the tractor. This is due to the increasing coefficient; its value depends on the type of freight transport with which the semi-trailer is used.

Type of transportKpr coefficient value
Passenger cars owned by organizations and motorcycles1,16
Trucks weighing up to 16 tons1,4
Tractors weighing over 16 tons1,25
Special equipment for construction and road use, except tracked ones1,24
All other types of cargo vehicles1

As an example, we can say that for the owner of a truck weighing 16 tons, provided that the device is used, the policy will be 40% more expensive. If a motorist decides to insure his trailer against possible risks under the CASCO program, such insurance will cost him 2-4% of its cost. In this case, the insurer will take into account the age of the mechanical device and the specifics of its use.

A trailer can be classified as a vehicle, despite the fact that it does not have a motor and does not move on its own.

Their peculiarity is that it is possible to transport goods only if you have a car. Today there are a significant number of different parameters, on the basis of which current trailers are classified.

They are:

  • similar to the platform;
  • with sides;
  • with one and two axes.

Thus, it is impossible to prohibit the owner of the car from insuring his trailer, but it is also impossible to oblige him to do so.

It does not matter which category of legal relationship the car owner belongs to, whether it is a citizen or an organization. In Russia, there has been a law in force for more than nine years regarding the fact that a person who owns a passenger towbar may not take out an auto liability insurance policy for it.

The cost of insurance for a car with a trailer will depend entirely on several factors. The first of them is the vehicle category (passenger or truck), the second is the maximum weight of the vehicle. Separate coefficients for calculating the price of insurance are provided for trailers for tractors, self-propelled vehicles and other vehicles that do not belong to the listed categories.

What category are the trucks?

According to the maximum weight allowed by the manufacturer, trucks are divided into categories:

  • N1 - trucks intended for the transportation of goods, having a technically permissible maximum weight of no more than 3.5 tons (category TS-B);
  • N2 - trucks intended for the transportation of goods, having a technically permissible maximum weight of over 3.5 tons, but not more than 12 tons (vehicle category - C);
  • N3 - trucks intended for the transportation of goods, having a technically permissible maximum weight of more than 12 tons (vehicle category - C).

Difficulties in obtaining compulsory motor liability insurance for trucks

When insuring a vehicle, you can always encounter a situation where, when contacting the office of the insurance company, the owner of the truck or the owner’s representative will be sent for additional inspection to a special observation deck located in the far Moscow region. At the same time, we note that even a new truck that has just left the showroom is subject to inspection. After passing the proposed additional inspection, a minimum amount of time is given to apply for an MTPL policy for the truck, not at the nearest office of the insurance company, but at the office where you were sent for the additional inspection. This application is considered for 30 days. At the same time, voluntary compulsory insurance of 10,000 rubles is not excluded. to the issued MTPL policy for the truck. In such a situation, the client loses both time and money.

Which insurance companies issue compulsory motor liability insurance for trucks?

Car insurance is one of the most common services these days. Each insurance company that provides auto insurance services issues compulsory motor vehicle liability insurance policies for trucks, as a license is issued to provide civil liability insurance for owners of vehicles of any category. An insurance contract (insurance policy) is an agreement between the Insurer (insurance company) and the Insured (vehicle owner). Under this agreement, the Insurer undertakes, for a specified fee (insurance premium), upon the occurrence of an event provided for in the agreement (an insured event-road accident), to compensate the Insured for damage caused to the insured property of the Insured (in this case, a truck) as a result of this event, within the framework of the current agreement.

Base rates for trucks

The amount of the insurance premium (the cost of the MTPL policy for trucks) depends on the base rate established and approved by the insurance company acting as the truck insurer. The base insurance rate for trucks (category “C”) with a permissible maximum weight of no more than 16 tons varies from 3,509 rubles. up to 4211 rub. For trucks (category “C”) with a permissible maximum weight of more than 16 tons, the base rate varies from 5284 rubles. up to 6341 rub. Further, during the calculation, coefficients are applied to this rate, the sizes of which are the same for each insurance company throughout the Russian Federation and approved by the RSA (Russian Union of Auto Insurers). Thus, the cost of an MTPL policy for trucks is influenced by the base insurance rate of the selected insurance company.

Truck insurance refusals

Due to their specific nature, trucks are very often involved in road accidents, so issuing an MTPL policy for insurance companies is potentially unprofitable. Insurance companies offer conditions for issuing a MTPL policy for a truck that delay the conclusion of an auto insurance contract. The policyholder is asked to provide the car for additional inspection at an inspection point, which may be located in the far Moscow region. An application for issuing an MTPL policy for a truck without additional inspection will not be accepted, and after submitting a document confirming the inspection, it will be considered within 30 days. In addition, additional insurance services are imposed. Also, issuing an MTPL policy for a truck in electronic form is not carried out for various “technical” reasons. As we said above, when you contact our company, you will never receive a refusal, and the MTPL policy for the truck will be issued by our company’s specialists within an hour.

Do I need a diagnostic card for a truck?

A diagnostic card for a truck, indicating that it has passed a technical inspection, confirms that the technical condition of the truck complies with the technical regulations of the Customs Union, that is, the safe operation of the truck. Without a valid diagnostic card (according to the validity period and availability of information about passing the technical inspection in the RSA database) it is impossible to issue an MTPL policy for a truck. If a truck with a permissible maximum weight does not exceed 3.5 tons, then it is exempt from technical inspection for 3 years (the report is based on the year of manufacture of the vehicle, and not on the year of sale), and in this case a diagnostic card is not required to issue an MTPL policy.

If a truck with a permissible maximum weight of no more than 3.5 tons is from 3 to 7 years old, then such trucks undergo technical inspection once every 2 years and a diagnostic card is issued for 2 years. For a truck with a permissible maximum weight of no more than 3.5 tons from 7 years and older, an annual technical inspection is required; a diagnostic card is issued for a period of 1 year.

A truck with a permissible maximum weight of more than 3.5 tons (plus trailers and semi-trailers with a permissible maximum weight of more than 3.5 tons) undergoes a truck inspection annually and a diagnostic card for such a truck is issued for 1 year.

Trucks and their trailers intended for the transportation of dangerous goods undergo technical inspection once every six months and a diagnostic card is issued for a period of 6 months.

The received diagnostic card for the truck, confirming the passage of technical inspection, must be in the EAISTO RSA database. EAISTO - Unified Automated Information System for Technical Inspection; RSA – Russian Union of Auto Insurers. When issuing an MTPL policy for a truck, both on paper and in electronic form, it is imperative to check the availability of a diagnostic card in the EAISTO RSA database by the VIN number of the truck, and if it is not available, by other parameters (body number, chassis number or license plate number of the truck) . If you do not have a diagnostic card for your truck confirming the technical inspection, our company will ensure prompt technical inspection at an accredited technical inspection point. Do I need to carry the diagnostic card with me on the truck? You must have a diagnostic card for a truck with you only if it is issued for 6 months in cases established by law.

OSAGO for trucks for regions

It is not always possible to issue an MTPL policy for a truck from an insurance company upon initial application (this procedure in real time and the proposed conditions may take 1-2 months), and if the owner of the truck has a residence permit (registration) not in the region of application , then this becomes a double problem. The situation when applying for an MTPL policy for a truck is the same for both individuals and legal entities who are trying to insure a truck at the place of its actual location, and not at the place of registration of the legal entity. Trucks are more likely than other vehicles to be involved in accidents and accidents. Therefore, MTPL for trucks poses a big risk for insurance companies, since the costs of paying losses after the occurrence of an insured event exceed the income from issuing MTPL policies for trucks.

When calculating the cost of an MTPL policy for a truck, a territorial coefficient is used, the value of which ranges from 0.6 to 2.0, depending on the place of registration of the truck owner. That is, the calculation is not affected by where the truck is operated, but by the region where the truck is registered. For example, in Moscow the territorial coefficient is 2.0, and in the regions it is 0.8. Thus, we can conclude that in Moscow it is not profitable to sell MTPL policies at regional rates. Registration of MTPL for trucks in electronic form, as practice shows, does not work effectively enough: when applying for registration of MTPL for trucks from the region, the servers of insurance companies’ websites give an error.

Our company will issue an MTPL policy for a truck from the region as soon as possible on the day of your request. You can leave a request on the company’s website or call the numbers provided.

What OSAGO expects for trucks in 2021.

In the second half of 2021, an increase in the size of basic tariffs and a change in segmentation when calculating the cost of compulsory motor liability insurance policy for trucks is expected. The decision to liberalize compulsory car insurance rates is due to the unprofitability of the existing system for insurance companies. Moreover, the introduction of mandatory sales of electronic MTPL and the introduced priority of in-kind compensation for losses under MTPL is carried out by insurance companies on their own without increasing the cost of the MTPL policy. Changes are allowed to the rules and conditions of insurance only once a year, so we can only hope that the increase in the price of compulsory motor insurance for a truck in 2021 will be smooth.

In addition to the MTPL policy, trucks, for example in Moscow, are burdened with another type of document - passes.

In addition to the MTPL policy, there is an equally pressing topic among owners of cargo vehicles, which concerns passes to enter Moscow. For 7 years now, a law has been in force in Moscow that allows heavy vehicles to move within the city during a specifically designated period of time. Please also note that in the absence of a pass, travel to the city is prohibited even during this specific period of time.

This law has a number of clauses that introduce various restrictions for trucks with different carrying capacities. Thus, those heavy vehicles whose carrying capacity exceeds 12 tons are allowed to travel around Moscow, in particular along the Moscow Ring Road from 22:00 to 6:00 am on weekdays and from 24:00 to 6:00 on non-working days. If the carrying capacity of a cargo vehicle exceeds 1 ton, then movement within the third transport ring is allowed from 22:00 to 6:00 in the morning on all days of the week.

What documents do you need to have with you on the road if you have a trailer?

If the car owner has a trailer, then when using it he must have the appropriate papers with him. Otherwise, he will have problems with the traffic police. Such documents include:

  • PTS and STS for both vehicles;
  • insurance policy;
  • user manual;
  • a number of accompanying documents for the cargo (license, permits, safety certificate, etc.);
  • diagnostic card (if a technical inspection was carried out).

All documents must be provided in originals.

What happens in the event of an accident with a trailer under compulsory motor liability insurance?

In the event of an accident, only the injured party can count on receiving compensation for damages. When contacting your insurance company, you need to take into account one nuance - what exactly is the cause of the accident: the car itself or the trailer. After all, payment according to the law can be made only in two cases:

  • only 2 people (no more) were involved in the accident;
  • The accident caused damage to the insured property.

Here's what you need to know about how to pay for a trailer accident:

  • if the accident occurred between a passenger car and a truck with a trailer, then it will be impossible to receive payment - it is considered that 3 vehicles were involved in the accident;
  • a passenger car with a trailer (registered to an individual) is considered by insurance companies as a single vehicle - payments will be made within the established time frame;
  • the driver who caused the accident must be included in the MTPL insurance policy (if the document is limited).

OSAGO and trailer

If an accident occurred in a passenger car with a trailer and the latter was damaged, then the relevant documents are drawn up as standard, but they indicate the trailer numbers issued when registering it with the traffic police. There is always the opportunity to file an accident under the European protocol, if there are good reasons for this and all conditions are met.

You can exercise the right to receive compensation for damages after an accident only if you notify your insurance company within 15 days after the incident. Along with the application, documents are submitted for the car, trailer and all those issued by the traffic police when recording the accident.

What do you need to know about the trailer?

A trailer is usually classified as a vehicle, despite the lack of an engine.
For this reason, independent movement is impossible, but cargo can be transported successfully. There are various types of trailers available these days. However, the only difference is the vehicle on which the equipment must be installed: a truck or a passenger car.

Many people argue about car trailer insurance. Based on the current legislation of the Russian Federation, there is an opportunity to refuse to insure a trailer or semi-trailer on a car. Legal entities must be registered, unlike individuals. The legislation makes a pleasant exception only for individuals.

For trucks, it is mandatory to obtain an MTPL insurance policy. This applies to legal entities and individuals. If an individual owns a truck trailer, he should be concerned about obtaining the appropriate insurance policy.
