Fine for a turn signal (turn signal) if not turned on (Article 12.14 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation)

What types of fines are provided for turning signals?

Failure to use turn signals carries a small penalty. However, if the violation is repeated, the motorist may end up with a decent amount of money for not turning on the turn signals.

Automotive legislation provides for the following system of penalties for such violations:

  • turn signal not turned on - 500 rubles;
  • the driver did not use a turn signal in a situation where it was necessary - 500 rubles;
  • the car is equipped with a non-working turn signal - 500 rubles;
  • fine for a red front turn signal (there are no fines for red rear turn signals) - 500 rubles.

It is a mistake to believe that it is easier to pay a fine than to comply with traffic rules. The requirement to use turn signals exists primarily to prevent traffic accidents. It is highly recommended not to ignore this rule.

Responsibility and fine for not turning on the turn signal 2021

Punishment for violation of maneuvering rules associated with failure to turn on the turn signal in cases prescribed by traffic rules is punishable under Art. 12.14 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation, namely part 1.

The sanction is small - just a fine of 500 rubles or even a warning from the traffic police inspector.

fine for turn signal

As a rule, the police fine for this offense in cases where it comes to the attention of the service registrar in the car. The mere fact that the inspector saw the violation is not enough, since it will be impossible to attach any additional evidence.

Therefore, if a violation does not fall within the coverage area of the service recorder on a car, the inspector will most often limit himself to a warning.

Fine

A fine is considered the most effective measure to combat traffic violations. Thus, after 2021, the fine for not including signs has been revised. Part one of Article 12.14 of the Code of Administrative Offenses regulates: the official fine for an unused turn signal is 500 rubles.

Drivers have the right to enjoy a discount when paying a fine for this type of offense. If the motorist manages to pay the amount within 20 days from the date of the decision, the fine will be reduced by half and amount to 250 rubles.

If the owner of the vehicle delays paying the fine, the amount of the administrative penalty may triple. After 70 days from the date the resolution comes into force, the driver will be required to pay 1,500 rubles. This amount is divided into two components: 500 rubles - the amount of the fine, 1000 rubles - the penalty for missing the payment deadline.

What will the fine be?

The amount of the fine in question is 500 rubles. Reason: provisions of Article 12.14 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation.

The fine can be paid within 20 days in half the amount. And if you are overdue for more than 70 days, you will have to transfer 1,500 rubles to the budget.

In some cases, the traffic police inspector agrees to issue a warning instead of a fine. As a rule, such a decision is made if the violation did not essentially lead to a dangerous situation (and it was unlikely that it would), if the driver fully admitted his guilt and did not make excuses, and also if the driver did not previously have similar violations in accordance with the information according to the database.

Warning

In some situations, a motorist can avoid such serious consequences as a fine.

The traffic inspector may limit the punishment to a warning in the following situations:

  • failure to comply with the requirement did not lead to any serious consequences on the road;
  • the motorist has a positive driving history and no other violations according to the database;
  • the situation that occurred is not considered a conflict;
  • The traffic police inspector failed to clearly record the traffic violation.

Sometimes drivers are faced with a certain controversial situation: the turn signal was on, but the driver turned in the opposite direction. For example, when a motorist indicates right before an intersection, but actually turns left or makes a U-turn.

Such an action disorients other road users and creates an emergency situation on the road. Therefore, such an offense is equivalent to a complete failure to use a turn signal and entails administrative liability.

What a punishment

Fine

Until the end of 2021, driving without turn signals would result in a modest fine. Currently, its size is 500 rubles . (Part 1 of Article 12.14 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation).

If you pay the fine within 20 days from the date the traffic police officer draws up a resolution on the case, then the amount is reduced to 250 rubles .

And, on the contrary, if you delay with payment (over 70 days), then the amount can be 1,500 rubles . (the amount of the fine itself and the monetary penalty for late payment is 1000 rubles).

Warning

fine for turn signal
Often a conversation with a traffic police officer ends with a slight scolding. This happens when:

  • no other serious consequences occurred;
  • the driver on the database has no other violations;
  • the situation is not conflict;
  • the violation is not clearly recorded.

Drivers often ask: is there a fine for not turning on a turn signal in the right direction? For example, the light came on on the right, and the driver changed his mind, turned around in a left arc and drove in the opposite direction. Although the light was blinking, since it was an incorrect signal, this is equivalent to not using the turn signal. For which there is corresponding responsibility.

Traffic rules requirements

Traffic regulations requirements clearly reflect all aspects of the use of turn signals. However, in real traffic conditions, the rules for using turn signals are often violated. This happens for a variety of reasons: from the driver’s personality traits to complete ignorance of the rules of the road.

When is a driver required to give a turn signal?

To eliminate the possibility of receiving a ticket, every driver should brush up on the rules for using a turn signal. The turn signal must be turned on in the following cases:

  • A driver enters a roundabout intersection. According to traffic rules, any entry into the roundabout must be accompanied by the inclusion of the right turn signal. If it turns off automatically, the motorist is required to duplicate the signal. Changing a right turn signal to a left one should only be done when leaving an intersection.
  • A motorist wants to stop at the edge of the roadway. It does not matter from which side the stop occurs: on the right or on the left. The only exception is when traffic stops due to a red traffic light.
  • Giving a signal when starting to move. If you want to stop stopping or parking and return to the roadway, the driver is obliged to notify other road users about this. This must be done using the left turn signal.
  • The driver makes a turn or U-turn. Regardless of whether there is an intersection at the traffic light, the owner of the vehicle is required to give a turn signal. You can avoid liability for not turning on a turn signal only when driving on a road with one turn that has no other exits or branches.
  • The owner of the vehicle wants to change lanes . You need to give a signal both during a normal lane change and when temporarily occupying a lane in case of overtaking. It is also important to remember that entering the adjacent lane is a high-risk maneuver. This means that the driver must make sure in advance that it is safe to change lanes.

The following list is not intended to be an exhaustive representation of situations in which a turn signal may be required. A turn signal may be needed even when leaving the yard to indicate the direction of movement to pedestrians. However, with a high degree of probability, a fine can only be received for the types of violations presented.

Sanctions will only be applied if there is a clear violation. It is worth noting that driving while the sign is on is also a punishable offense. Even if there are no turns on a straight road, a traffic police officer has every right to issue a fine for a lit turn signal.

What to do if the turn signal is faulty

If the turn signal is not working, the motorist is obliged to do his best to prevent an emergency by all available means. The driver's first action in such situations is to immediately stop and try to fix the problem. However, repairs may not be possible due to the lack of necessary tools.

If it was not possible to fix the turn signal on the spot, the motorist should go to the nearest service center for repair. However, a malfunction of the indicator does not relieve the driver from the need to inform other road users about the direction of further movement. In such situations, you need to use your hand to signal a turn. The car owner can read about how to correctly indicate the direction with his hand in the traffic rules.

Ignoring the requirement to inform drivers about the direction of travel when the turn signal is faulty is an administrative offense. However, in practice, drivers are rarely prosecuted for such offenses. This statistics is explained by the low probability of timely detection of a violation and the relatively low level of responsibility.

It is important to know: even if the traffic light signal is not working, traffic police officers cannot deprive a motorist of the right to drive a car due to the impossibility of further operation of the car. Such actions on the part of inspectors will be classified as unprofessional.

When to turn your turn signals on and off

The Code of Administrative Offenses does not have precise wording regarding exactly when motorists must show a turn signal. The only requirement is that the indicator must be turned on well in advance of the maneuver.

The concept of “in advance” can be interpreted in different ways. However, it is worth adhering to the opinion established in practice. Signaling in advance requires that the motorist must signal in such a way that other road users can easily understand the intentions of the driver who turned on the turn signal. If the signs are turned on in advance, other motorists will not be forced to urgently change their trajectory.

Turning on the turn signal: nuances

Giving a turn signal has certain nuances that every driver must take into account. You cannot use a turn signal only in accordance with personal beliefs and ideas.

It is important to remember the following:

  • The turn signal is given regardless of the presence or absence of other vehicles on the road. This is explained by the fact that the driver may simply not notice other road users. According to the rules, even when driving on a forest road, a motorist must give turn signals.
  • It is necessary to turn on the turn signal, which corresponds to the direction of movement of the motorist. You cannot give a signal at random; this misleads other vehicle owners, which can lead to an accident. Giving an incorrect signal is equivalent to a full violation. In some cases, disorientation is a much more serious offense than the complete absence of a warning signal. In the vast majority of cases, drivers receive a fine without warning for such a violation.
  • You should turn on the turn signal no later than 6-9 seconds before performing the maneuver. This time period is quite enough to inform motorists and pedestrians in advance. However, it is important to remember that these values are averages. A specific situation may require an earlier or later signal.

These three unspoken rules will allow the driver to promptly inform other drivers about further actions and prevent a traffic accident. It is worth remembering that before turning on the turn signal, the driver must analyze the road situation each time and act in accordance with traffic regulations.

When to use a turn signal

There are many situations when you need to turn on your turn signals:

What a maneuverWhat turn signal
before starting the movementmostly left or right when starting from the left side of a one-way road
before the turnright or left depending on the direction of turn
before the turnleft
before changing lanes to the next laneleft or right, depends on the direction of the maneuver
before stoppingmostly right, sometimes left if stopping on the left side of a one-way road

According to traffic regulations, the turn signal is turned on in advance. Experts say that this lead time is 6-9 seconds before the actual maneuver.

Responsibility for a faulty turn signal

Part one of Article 12.5 of the Code of Administrative Offenses stipulates that the use of vehicles with malfunctions is prohibited in the Russian Federation. A non-functioning turn signal is also grounds for stopping the use of the car.

When driving with a faulty turn signal, the driver may receive a warning from the traffic police inspector if there are no serious consequences. If the offense contributed to the emergence of a public danger, the motorist will receive a fine of 500 rubles.

Fine for not working turn signal

Despite the fact that if the turn signal is not working, the driver can get out of the situation by indicating a turn with his hand, this will justify it only in a situation where the turn signals have stopped working while driving.
The fact is that malfunctions of turn signals are among those breakdowns with which driving is prohibited in Russia. This is stated in Article 12.5 of the Administrative Code. Therefore, for faulty turn signals you can also get:

  • Warning;
  • Fine (500 rubles).

You need to know that turn signals must be of the established type. All kinds of modifications can also lead to punishment in rubles.

Is it possible to use red turn signals?

Installing red turn signals often raises many questions.

Most of them can be answered using two propositions:

  • According to traffic regulations, red turn signals are only possible at the rear. Installing red signals in front is illegal.
  • Technical regulations prohibit the installation of red signals on turn signals, regardless of their location (rear or front).

Part one of Article 12.5 of the country’s administrative code for 2021 provides for a penalty of 500 rubles for red turn signals at the rear and white ones all around. The installation of red signals in front is sanctioned by a special penalty.

If a motorist wants to experiment with installing lights, he must be prepared to lose his right to drive for a period of 6 months to one year. A similar penalty is provided for the presence on a vehicle of any lighting devices, the color or mode of which differs from the established regulations. Red turn signals on the front of the car are no exception.

It is important to know that equipping a car with xenon does not fall under Article 12.5, which involves deprivation of a driver’s license for violating the regulations. Prosecution with reference to this provision of the law is considered an unlawful action by traffic police officers.

How is a violation recorded?

Violations associated with giving a turn signal are not recorded automatically. Traffic cameras cannot yet record this type of offense. Only a traffic inspector can hold you accountable for a turn signal.

The traffic police officer must personally draw up a report and issue the driver an appropriate fine. It is worth noting that the driver has every right to ask exactly how the violation was recorded.

If the inspector asserts the existence of a violation without significant evidence (in words), the driver has a chance to successfully appeal the decision of the authorized officer. If the protocol was drawn up on the basis of more serious arguments, challenging it will be an irrational action.

You can try to persuade the traffic police inspector to issue a warning. However, if a traffic police officer nevertheless issues a fine based on a video recording or witness testimony, the driver can only save money by paying the fine on time.

How to avoid a fine

It is possible to avoid liability through the presence of mitigating circumstances. When stopped for failure to use turn signals, the driver, to reduce the penalty, can:

  • admit your guilt;
  • indicate the absence of fines for the last six months (if you have a positive driving history).

If the authorized officer does not perceive these circumstances as mitigating, the driver receives a fine with the possibility of payment at a discount. This provision of the law is regulated by Article 32.2 of the Code of Administrative Violations.

If there is a faulty turn signal, the motorist will avoid liability only if the gestures intended to indicate maneuvers are correctly used.

The driver must know the following:

  • an outstretched left hand to the left or right - the motorist will turn in the indicated direction;
  • the arm is bent at the elbow (angle 90 degrees) - the driver will turn in the direction opposite to the extended arm (if the signal is shown with the right hand bent at the elbow, the driver will turn left);
  • hand extended upward - the driver is about to make a stop.

It is worth noting that forward movement is not accompanied by gestures. If the driver incorrectly uses any of the signals, he will provoke an emergency situation. For such inattention, the traffic police inspector will also hold the vehicle owner accountable.
