All about the AS mark on your driver's license

New information in the new type of license

The AS mark is usually located in column number 12, where all restrictions relating to a certain category of vehicle are indicated. In addition to this, this list includes:

  • Symbol “B” - gives the right to drive any type of vehicle with a trailer heavier than 1000 kg;
  • Designation “C” - allows movement on vehicles with large trailers with at least two axles;
  • O - allows the driver to ride an articulated passenger bus.

The remaining abbreviations, indicating general restrictions for all types of vehicles, are placed in paragraph number 14, as on old-style certificates. But we will look further at what AS means in driving licenses in categories B1, C1, and D1.

Other notes in column 12

We have discussed what AS means on a driver’s license in paragraph 12. In addition to this inscription, column 12 of this document may have other designations.

Additional marks are presented in the form of abbreviations in Latin:

  1. MS (“motorcycle handling”). The right to drive a motorcycle with a certain type of seating position and a motorcycle steering wheel. This mark is placed if the car owner has closed one of the categories A or A1, while the second category or subcategory is open. If both categories A and A1 are open, no mark is given.
  2. MS (“manual control”). Driving a vehicle with manual control (manual transmission).
  3. AT (“automatic transmission”). Permission to drive cars only with automatic transmission. For drivers who have learned to drive a car with manual transmission, this rule does not apply. The mark can be placed in both columns 12 and 14 of the document. If it is in paragraph 14, then it applies to all categories, and if in paragraph 12, then it applies to one specific category.
  4. APS (“Acoustic Parking System Mandatory”).

Allows the driver to drive a vehicle, provided that it is equipped with an acoustic parking system.

In addition to the above entries, you can also find other marks in the license that provide additional information. For example, about the health status of the car owner.

AS stamp on driver's license

Having discovered the AS symbols on their car, many motorists confuse them with the well-known AT restriction, which prohibits the driver from driving a car with a manual transmission. However, the mentioned value does not at all indicate the type of gearbox (automatic or manual). And most often it is used for a specific type of transport.

Decoding the meaning

The abbreviation AS on the new license means that the motorist is allowed to drive vehicles exclusively with a round steering wheel. At first glance, such a decoding seems stupid, since it is quite difficult to find a steering wheel of a different shape.

But if we are talking about motorcycles and light trucks built on an automobile base (ATVs, rickshaws, snowmobiles, loaders and hoists), then for them an arched or elongated steering wheel is considered the norm. Therefore, for the listed categories of vehicles, the mentioned restriction is applied most often.

In what cases should I put

The symbols AS on the license are literally translated as automotive steering, which means an automobile type of steering. This means that these signs will be placed under the corresponding types of vehicles (A and B1). Moreover, this restriction is established solely at the request of the owner of the crust. After all, without such a mark he will not be able to get behind the wheel of some ATVs and loaders, even if he has certain skills.

What does the AS mark on a driver's license mean in 2020?

Good afternoon, dear reader.

The driver’s main document confirming the right to drive a vehicle is a driver’s license . On the one hand, all driver's licenses are similar to each other, but on the other, they have significant differences.

  • The essence of these differences is that each license allows you to drive only certain vehicles belonging to the selected category or categories:
  • Driver's license categories
  • In this article we will talk about the “ Special notes ” column of the driver’s license, which imposes additional restrictions on driving:

Where to get and how to install the Plato on-board device

  • Where is the special notes column?
  • Markings on the license of the new model (2020): AT - automatic;
  • MS - motorcycle seat;
  • AS - car landing;
  • ML - prohibition of driving mopeds;
  • MS - manual control;
  • APS - parking sensors;
  • GCL - glasses or lenses;
  • HA/CF - hearing aid;
  • Driving experience;
  • Duplicate;
  • A medical certificate is required.
  1. combinations of vehicles of categories “BE”, “CE”, “DE” - to persons who have the right to drive vehicles of categories “B”, “C”, “D” for at least twelve months;
  2. Thus, based on the provisions of the Federal Law, categories BE and CE should be opened for you, since driving experience in categories B and C is more than 20 months.
  3. But the answer turned out to be incorrect (as the traffic police told me and refused to open category BE)
  4. Expert:

This issue is regulated by the Rules for conducting examinations for the right to drive vehicles and issuing driver’s licenses by the traffic police departments of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, approved by Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation of October 24, 2014 N 1097.

It says the following

Persons who have the right to drive vehicles of categories “B”, “C”, “D” for at least 12 months are allowed to take exams for driving combinations of vehicles of categories “BE”, “CE”, “DE”.

That is, you should not have a category opened automatically if you have experience in other categories. If you have experience, you are allowed to take the exams.

  • If you passed the exams for categories D and E Andrey
  • As I understand it, you didn’t take the VE.
  • Expert:
  • AS in driving license category B1

    We found out what the AS mark in paragraph 12 of the driver’s license means. But not many people know why it is most often placed under category B1, since this class of vehicle appeared in the licenses quite recently. In order to understand the relationship between the two mentioned designations, you need to consider in advance which transport falls under point B1.

    What vehicles are included in this subcategory?

    In accordance with the legislation of the Russian Federation, a group of self-propelled vehicles marked B1 can be opened by anyone over 18 years of age. The following vehicles fall under this classification:

    • ATVs whose weight does not exceed 350 kg (the engine volume of such equipment will also be limited to 50 cubic centimeters);
    • Light tricycles with a speed of no more than 50 km/h (maximum engine displacement is similar to the previous model);
    • Small forklifts (including automated ones), weighing up to 550 kg and with a power unit of up to 15 kW (to drive this type of transport, in addition to a driver’s license, the driver must also have an official permit obtained from a specialized training center).

    The AS mark on the driver's license will not apply to other vehicles with a motorcycle seat.

    Restrictions

    If the automotive steering note is located exclusively opposite category B1, then the following types of vehicles will be subject to the restriction:

    • Two-wheeled mopeds and scooters (marked as M on the driver's license);
    • Heavy motorcycles and rickshaws (on the new VU are located under the abbreviation A);
    • Compact cars with a motorcycle-like seating position and appropriate steering.

    Attention! Driving of the listed groups of vehicles, with the AS mark on the driver's license, is strictly prohibited.

    But most inspectors do not pay attention to the special designations numbered 12 and 14. Therefore, in practice, citizens driving an inappropriate category of transport rarely receive a fine.

    Mark AS in subcategory B1

    As in the previous case, the AS mark in a driver’s license of category B1 is placed only in the limiting 12th column. If category A is open at the same time, you will never see this mark, since in this case you can drive a vehicle with both types of steering by default. If we talk about open category B, then, say, you will be allowed to drive a buggy, since this type of transport is equipped with a round car-shaped steering wheel. But with ATVs/tricycles the situation is completely different as the steering is made in the form of a stick.

    But how many Russians have buggies in their garage?

    For fans of ATVs, the AS mark is also affixed in subcategory B1. However, the interpretation of this mark in this case is quite vague - the holder of such rights is allowed to drive vehicles equipped with a conventional steering wheel.

    But what is meant by such an explanation? With subcategory B1 open, the list of permitted vehicles also includes ATVs and tricycles (provided that they are equipped with engines with a capacity not exceeding fifty cc). And this is already a fairly extensive class of units, represented on the market by a large number of models.

    A special place on the back of the certificate is given to existing and open categories (and subcategories) of vehicles.

    Possible misconceptions

    The most common misconception among motorists is that they incorrectly decipher the abbreviation AS, mistaking this inscription for a designation of the type of gearbox (automatic transmission). But in reality, these two marks convey completely different information.

    Such errors in their understanding can cost the motorist good money (from 5 to 15 thousand rubles), which will be spent on paying for the regulations. Although in fact, even traffic police officers do not always guess what AS means on a driver’s license.

    Fines for using a driving license without taking into account the specified notes

    When driving an ATV or any other vehicle with a motorcycle handlebar and seating position, having an AS restriction in place, the driver risks running into the following administrative penalties provided for by the Code of Administrative Offenses:

    • A financial penalty in the amount of 5,000 rubles (if the illegal act is repeated, the fine triples);
    • Deprivation of rights for up to 3 months (an extreme measure that applies to persistent violators).

    Advice! Therefore, it is better to learn the designation of abbreviations in the new crust in advance, since otherwise it will not be possible to avoid wasting money.

    We learned what AS stands for on a driver's license and what categories it most often applies to. In conclusion, it is worth adding that replacing the old VU is only a matter of time. This means that every motorist will have to remember the decoding of special notes.

    What does the MS mark mean?

    MS - from English “motorcycle steering”, that is, a motorcycle position.

    The MS mark is placed exclusively opposite category B1 in column 12 of the table on the back of the driver’s license.

    The MS mark means the following - the driver has the right to drive vehicles of category B1 exclusively with a motorcycle type of control. That is, a tricycle or ATV must have a steering wheel and a riding position like a motorcycle.

    Driving tricycles and quadricycles with a car-like stance is prohibited!

    The MS mark is given to those drivers whose category A is open, but category B is closed.
