Necessary and voluntary vehicle and driver liability insurance - differences between CASCO and OSAGO

Every motorist is required by law to buy compulsory motor liability insurance, but payments under a compulsory insurance policy are not always enough to compensate for damage caused to victims - third parties. And in this case, the culprit of the accident must compensate part of the amount himself. Voluntary motor liability insurance allows you to protect yourself from such costs. For motorists who want to minimize their financial risks in the event of an accident, AlfaStrakhovanie offers an additional insurance product - extended compulsory motor liability insurance. You can buy such a policy together with CASCO.

Why do you need extended MTPL

The CASCO policy only covers the damage that was caused to your car. This insurance program does not affect your liability to the second party injured in the accident. At the same time, the maximum damage that an insurance company can compensate under an MTPL policy is regulated by law, and at the moment (April 2021) its amount is 400 thousand rubles. In contrast, the payment under an extended compulsory motor liability insurance policy is limited only by the limit of the sum insured, which you can choose yourself. We offer two coverage options under this auto insurance program – 1 million rubles and 1.5 million rubles.

How to apply for DSAGO

A DSAGO policy can be issued by any insurance company.
In addition, individual institutions combine several insurance policies when registering a policy. In this case, you don’t have to go to different organizations, since in the event of an insured event, compensation will be paid by one company. However, you can buy DSAGO separately. When purchasing insurance, you should specify the type of payment. It comes in the following types:

  1. Taking into account wear and tear, the longer the vehicle is in use, the greater the wear and tear. The cost decreases.
  2. The percentage of wear and tear is not taken into account - it is more beneficial, since the damage is compensated to the victim in full.

Tariffs and payments under the DSAGO policy

Tariffs for registration of DSAGO are set taking into account several parameters. Among other things, the price will depend on the maximum liability limit of the policy. The greater the amount of damage covered by insurance, the higher the cost of the insurance product.

Payments for compensation of damage under the extended insurance policy are made minus the coverage under the standard OSAGO policy. Let's consider a case where a car owner purchased a DSAGO with a limit of 1 million rubles. If in an accident due to the fault of the policyholder, damage to another vehicle in the amount of 1 million rubles is caused, payments are made as follows. According to standard compulsory motor liability insurance, 400 thousand rubles are compensated. The remaining amount will constitute compensation under the extended liability insurance policy. In the example under consideration, this is 600 thousand rubles.

You can buy DSAGO from any official representative of AlfaStrakhovanie at the same time as purchasing a CASCO policy. For more information about the cost of insurance, please contact our consultant.

How much does the policy cost?

Standard option

The monthly insurance premium rate is 1 rub. 96 kopecks for 1 sq. m of apartment. One sq. m of premises according to basic insurance is estimated at 44,000 rubles. For example, for an apartment of 50 square meters. m monthly insurance will cost 98 rubles, if you pay every month - it’s 1176 rubles. in year. The maximum amount to be reimbursed in this case is 2 million 200 thousand rubles.

You need to pay for the service every month. If you do not pay on time, the contract is terminated and you will need to re-sign it. To do this, you just need to pay for insurance again.

Option with increased coverage amount

There is also insurance with an increased amount of insurance coverage. In it, insurance premiums are paid for the entire year at once according to the tariff: 39.48 rubles. for 1 sq. m of total area of the apartment. Payout limit: 66,000 rub. for 1 sq. m of total area of the apartment. Accordingly, for an apartment with an area of 50 square meters, insurance will cost 1974 rubles. in year. The maximum amount of payments is 3 million 300 thousand rubles. To apply for the second option, you need to contact one of the insurance companies that are included in this program. You can check this list with your management company.

When it's useful

If, as a result of an insured event, your apartment is destroyed or becomes uninhabitable, you must be provided with new housing or compensated for losses. This is a big plus, but you need to understand that the case must be insured.

According to the rules, the object of insurance is a residential premises (apartment, room), including its structural elements, finishing elements, engineering equipment, elements of internal communications.

Apartments are non-residential premises, so they are not subject to state insurance.

When payment is not due under state insurance

In the list of risks there is not a word about civil liability insurance to neighbors. If the faucet breaks and you flood your neighbors, this insurance will not compensate you for anything. The insurance applies to the apartment itself and does not apply to the property in it, even if very expensive furniture and equipment are damaged.

Problems with household water-consuming devices and appliances, including washing machines and dishwashers, are not included in insurance cases. But floods, for example, due to a malfunctioning washing machine, happen quite often.

If the installation rules were violated or there was a leak from the roof, there is also no chance of payment.

You can view the full list of exceptions by following this link.

Features of state insurance

The insurance begins to be valid the next month after payment. If you deposited money in September, you will be protected only from October. Regular comprehensive insurance starts from the moment of payment or the next day.

By paying the cost of voluntary insurance, you join the offer and agree to these rules.

If you want to get your money back, you can use a cooling-off period of 14 days from the date of conclusion of the contract, which gives you the right to refuse voluntary insurance. Or don’t pay for insurance next month - then the contract will be terminated automatically.

If a disaster occurs, you must document the damage - obtain a special report from the utility company. Then you have three days to notify the insurance company about the incident and draw up a notice with all the necessary information.

As with comprehensive insurance, it's important to act quickly.

Advantages and disadvantages

Many insurance organizations offer their clients a number of additional bonuses when concluding a DOSAGO contract.
For example, such as:

  1. Concluding an accident insurance agreement with the insurer. Those. It is planned to purchase two insurance products. In addition to an additional motor vehicle policy, the policyholder can also insure himself and passengers against an unforeseen situation in the event of an accident.
  2. Free evacuation of cars from the scene of an accident. The usual cost of this service is about 3,000 rubles, but you can call a tow truck through the SK remote control.
  3. Departure to the scene of an accident by a motor vehicle commissioner. You should carefully read the contract, since many insurance companies do not provide such a service.
  4. Provision of services by the insurance company for collecting the necessary documentation for making payments.
  5. Payments of compensation, in the calculation of which depreciation of the car is not taken into account.
  6. Providing services if your car breaks down on the road. Either a vehicle commissioner goes to the place where the car has broken down, or the car can be evacuated to a service station.

Very often, insurance company agents offer to conclude an additional insurance contract when renewing a compulsory motor liability insurance policy. At the same time, they will tell you about the terrible rates of accidents on the roads today. In fact, no one knows for sure whether a DSAGO policy is really necessary, as the insurance company agents say (you can find out more about DSAGO in OSAGO here).

Many car enthusiasts believe that such insurance will help cover all the costs of expensive repairs. But is this true?

In fact, insurance companies simply suppress many facts. Of course, such an insurance contract has its advantages, but is this contract really necessary as insurance agents present it? The advantages of such a policy are obvious:

  1. It's not very expensive.
  2. A large number of insurance companies offer a number of discounts in addition to the contract.
  3. Such a contract includes many risks that will be considered an insured event.

Attention! If you confidently drive your car and have extensive driving experience, you carefully monitor the serviceability of the car and, in general, use it several times a year, then you are unlikely to need such an agreement.

Another thing is if your driving experience is short and you need additional insurance, then yes, you will simply need a DSAGO policy.

Once a year you will pay an insignificant amount to the insurance company for the purchase of such an insurance product, but you will feel calm behind the wheel all year.

OSAGO and DSAGO: what they have in common and how they differ

When comparing two policies, you first need to highlight their common characteristics:

  • object of insurance – liability to third parties
  • insured event - an accident for which the owner of the insurance is found to be at fault
  • reasons for refusal to pay: the perpetrator being intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident, intentionally committing an accident, driving a car by a person who does not have a license or is not included in the insurance

The differences between the policies are that compulsory motor liability insurance must be issued, you must take it with you, present it to the police, and if you do not have it, you will be fined. DSAGO is purchased voluntarily; you do not need to have it with you. Tariffs for compulsory insurance are approved by the Bank of Russia, and for voluntary insurance - by the insurance company. For DSAGO, a franchise of 400,000 rubles can be established. If the damage is less than or equal to this amount, it is not compensated. This is reasonable, because payments within these limits must be made under compulsory motor liability insurance.

Extended insurance, what is it?

DSAGO is not an independent insurance policy, but in fact, is considered as an addition to the compulsory motor liability insurance agreement you have already drawn up. Of course, this addition will cost some money (Federal Law No. 4015-1 “On the organization of insurance business in the Russian Federation”) and depends on the specific insurance company.

The procedure for obtaining extended insurance is practically no different from purchasing a regular MTPL policy.

There is a common misconception that DSAGO can be purchased without receiving compulsory motor liability insurance. In reality this is not the case. A voluntary insurance policy can be obtained together with compulsory motor liability insurance, or after some time has passed.

paragraph 5 of article 4 of law No. 40-FZ

In addition, you can expand your insurance with another insurance company.

Let's sum it up

DSAGO is an additional insurance that expands the limit of payments and the list of services for compulsory motor vehicle insurance. Its features are as follows:

  • issued only on the basis of a standard policy;
  • DGO can be issued simultaneously with compulsory motor liability insurance or later and even with another insurance company;
  • to obtain an extended policy you will only need a standard one; if this is an initial application, then the driver’s personal documents and papers for the car are needed;
  • the cost of DPP is set by a specific insurance company; it can be fixed or the sum of several factors;
  • when calculating compensation, the amount of payment for compulsory motor vehicle insurance is included in compensation for DSAGO, and is not added to it;
  • the law does not establish a standard form for this type of insurance; each company has the right to issue it at its own discretion.

Extended “car insurance” is financial protection for the driver against the risk of damage to expensive cars, the repair of which will not be covered by the standard policy limit. Obtaining additional insurance does not involve any difficulties, and its cost corresponds to the service provided.

Necessary documents for registration of DSAGO

The package of necessary documentation for registration of an extended compulsory motor liability insurance is also not defined by law. The insurer independently determines the list of required papers. To conclude a transaction for the purchase of DSAGO, the applicant’s data and information about the vehicle will be required. Therefore it is necessary:

  1. Passport. It is permissible to issue a policy on the basis of another identification document of the established form.
  2. Driver license. It is mandatory to open a category that corresponds to the insured vehicle.
  3. OSAGO. It must be valid at the time of application.
  4. STS. The document confirms the official registration of the vehicle.

If a driver wants to receive a limit of over 2 million rubles, this increases the risk for the insurer. However, the premium that a citizen is obliged to pay to the organization for the service provided also increases. Therefore, institutions do not refuse extended MTPL insurance, even if a person wants to increase the limit by a larger amount. However, to protect itself, the organization may ask to provide a vehicle for inspection.
